Year of the Ox – CNY 2009

Happy Lunar New Year! Since we left HK our family haven’t really celebrated CNY like we used to. We’d still gather for dinner on New Year’s Eve and the first and second day. That’s about it. Over the years we don’t even put out the red box with the candied veggies and sweets because no one eats them anymore. Honestly I missed those, especially the candied winter melon and carrots.

This year I went to the Aberdeen Centre for the CNY Flower Marketing to get myself in the festive mood. Here are some pictures from my visit.

Here are some other photos I thought were interesting. There’s this one with a type of plant that I’ve never seen before.

There was also this one table that displayed clay crafts. Too bad I was not allowed to take photos. However I’m going to be taking the course to learn how to make a Chinese donut & soy milk cart (think of the wooden ones in HK from long long time ago). I’ll take photos of my finish project by the end of February.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer – BC Cancer Foundation

I have recently found out that my friend Ying, her sister and her coworkers are be participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. This is a two day event where participants will be cycling from Vancouver to Seattle on June 20 – 21 . The money raised will go towards cancer research, treatment and services for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Did you know that:

On the basis of current incidence rates, 39% of Canadian women and 44% of men will develop cancer during their lifetimes.

On the basis of current mortality rates, 24% of women and 28% of men, or approximately 1 out of every 4 Canadians, will die from cancer.

Source.

That’s actually pretty scary consider that despite our technology and medical advances, the mortality rate of cancer is still pretty high. Interestingly, lung cancer still leads as the number one cause of cancer death in both men and women.

Visit The Ride to Conquer Cancer website if you want to find out more or to participate in the event. Please consider sponsoring Ying and her goal of raising $3,200. You can make a donation by visiting Ying’s personal page on the Ride to Conquer Cancer website.

Dine Out Vancouver: Jan 14 – Feb 1, 2009

Ok incase you haven’t heard the news, Dine Out Vancouver started yesterday. This year the list of restaurant grew again and so did the prices. It’s now at $18, $28, and $38 category, a $3 increase from last year’s prices.

I haven’t gone to a Dine Out since two years ago. Tomorrow I’ll be going to Lux at Caprice with Al (click link to view Dine Out menu). Another one that had caught my interest is the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. I’m probably going to go there after Dine Out though. My experience with Dine Out event is that the restaurants are more cramped and service isn’t as good as it should be.

Anyways, if you are going to Dine Out this year, I’d love to  hear your stories so please post a comment to let me know. Oh and don’t forget that you can win some fabulous prizes if you vote for the Best Bite Awards. Good luck!

Whistler Photo Recap

So I finally got those pictures from HM of our Whistler trip.  Here’s a one taken from the new peak to peak gondola:

We were lucky enough to ride the one with the glass floor.

One of the snowboarders on the gondola decided to slide under the railings … if we could get a top view shot it would be pretty cool. Looks like he’s falling.

Here’s me and the new gondola.

The next day it was snowing so we decided to head back to Vancouver after lunch. Al and I found these funky hats. They match our jackets quite well don’t they. Haha.

New Year, New Look

Happy belated New Year! Best wishes in 2009!

I’ve been quite busy the past few weeks so I didn’t get to update the site. Here’s what’ve been happening so far:

1) I’ve moved from a Marketing & Sales Coordinator to a Marketing Communication Specialist. Yay! There are lots of major projects coming up in this first quarter and I’m a little nervous. Hopefully all will turn out well and we’ll be able to bring in some revenue.

2) I got this super cute T-shirt from Mimi Mcqueen during boxing week sale. It’s 50% off! I also got a dress from there for $16! A look at this T-shirt and you’ll know why I got it:

Meow meow meow! Ok the only thing that’s “bad” about it is everyone seems to want to tug at the cherry. Please refrain from tugging at them! See the expression on Meow’s face? He means business.

3) There’ve been some crazy snowstorm over the past few weeks. I was so glad I decided to buy the Helly Hanson boots on boxing day. It kept me warm and dry while I stomp all over the slush on my way to and from work.

I finally upgraded to Wordpress 2.7 and updated all my plugins. As you can see I’ve also change to a new theme for the new year. I really liked the little photo space up at the top right. Hopefully I’ll be able to take some new photos each month to post there.
